About The Knitty Gritty

Why do we do what we do?

Now that is a good question isn't it? I can tell you, as a rugged man, I never in my life thought I would create and sell custom yarn for a living yet here I find myself typing an explanation of why I do just that. I always imagined myself working in the outdoor industry. I thought something along of lines of guiding fly fishers, hunters, hikers or something like that.

Life of course had something else in mind. My career path took me into the funeral profession for nearly a decade. During that time I have had the privilege of serving families during the most trying times of their lives. As you might imagine in my line of work, a lot of baggage can be worn home at the end of the day. Knitting things for my wife, kids, family and friends and spinning yarn were often the activities that brought me peace at the end of the day.

Then, one day, the tragedy I helped others through on a daily basis visited my wife and I as well. After just experiencing two miscarriages, we lost our third baby, a daughter we named Grace, to stillbirth at 24 weeks. Not knowing this was the news we would get when my wife went to the hospital for a checkup we did not have anything to dress our daughter in after she was born. The hospital presented us with a beautiful dress someone had made for families experiencing such a loss. These hand sewn dresses and hand knit and crochet blankets and hats that people donated for these little angles touched me so deeply in that moment. I knew I wanted to some day return the favor to others.

I did not want to knit just plain hats and blankets for the hospital though, I wanted them to be extra special. That is when I decided I would personally dye the yarn and knit the hats for donation. I can only do so much though. By starting the Knitty Gritty Fiber Arts it will allow us to be able to reach so many more families hurting after the loss of their precious angel.

That is why here at the Knitty Gritty we donate and hand knit hat, made with our hand dyed yarn for every 5 skeins of yarn sold. These hats will be presented to various NICU's around the country. If there is a hospital you would like to add to our list please feel free to reach out to me and let me know!

Thank you for your support and keep creating!
